Waltz

This diagram shows all the links I know between the basic waltz figures.

This is an attempt to organise the moves by category. It's not as complete but I think it is a better learning aid.

Rumba

This diagram shows all the links I know between the basic rumba figures. There are more links than this, but I think these are the most important ones to learn.

Cha cha cha

Cha Cha's move list is almost identical to Rumba. What are the differences?

  • Cha cha has no alternative basic step
  • Cha cha has no cucharachas
  • No cucharachas means you can't do the complete 'side steps' figure. (Although individual side steps are allowed in both dances.)
  • In cha cha the aida is 'not recommended' by Walter Laird, but the ISTD seem to allow it.
  • In cha cha the the rope spinning is 'not recommended' by Walter Laird, although it is commonly taught.
  • Two sets of chas may be optionally added to the hockey stick.
  • Rumba's 6 walks are always replaced with 3 cha chas.

Salsa

This is how I link my salsa moves together. Since every salsa teacher teaches differently you may not find this very useful!

Dance Diagrams

The most important part of learning to freestyle (or to choreograph your own routine) is knowing what moves can be linked to what other moves.
